I've been re-reading Taylor Branch's Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-1963, and I had forgotten this anecdote about W.E.B. Du Bois, the eminent historian.
Someone congratulated him on being the first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard, and Du Bois replied, "The honor, I assure you, was Harvard's."
What a great zinger!
