gdjohnson When Georgia Douglas Johnson published her first volume of poetry, she was thirty-six years old. Although Johnson started her career as a writer later than women such as Alice Dunbar Nelson , her work was prolific.

In addition, Johnson's ability to run a literary salon--providing a space for writers and artists to thrive during the Harlem Renaissance was important to its existence.
