Universal Negro Improvement Association

Definition: Marcus Garvey and Amy Ashwood founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914 in Jamaica. The goal of the organization was to organize blacks throughout the world, create societies in Africa, and establish an independent black economy based on capitalism. Once Garvey brought the organization to the United States in 1916, it achieved some success until 1922.
