African Methodist Episcopal Church

Definition: In 1878, when St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia attempted to segregate its black parishioners, blacks withdrew and formed Bethel African Methodist Church. In 1816, the African Methodist Episcopal church was created, and ex-slave Richard Allen was ordained as its minister. The A.M.E. became the first independent black Protestant church.
