Definition: In early America, the need for cheap labor led to the capture and transportation of Africans to the Americas. Slavery emerged in the Caribbean in the early 16th century and in the United States in 1619. By the late 1700s, slaves were in high demand for the production of cotton. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves.
