From Jessica McElrath:

What is so interesting about African American history is the importance it plays in helping to understand American society today. From the early years of this developing country, regardless of the obstacles placed in the way, blacks have been key figures in bringing about change. From the abolition of slavery to the termination of Jim Crow laws during the civil rights movement, African American history encompasses some of the most important times in America's history.
