From Jessica McElrath, About.com

During the 1850s, Harriet Tubman was legendary for her role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. After her own escape from slavery, she helped more than 300 slaves reach freedom. Her commitment to the cause was beyond ordinary dedication, and it earned her the name "Moses."
