"Field Hollers"

By Jessica McElrath, About.com

Definition: Field hollers were used during and more commonly after slavery when physical isolation on plantations and farms increased. For the most part, it was solo music but sometimes there was a response if another worker was nearby. Songs could be wordless or could encompass feelings, attitudes, or any topic.

Examples:

O-O-O, This donkey won't drink water.
I'll knock him in the collar till he go stone blind.
