After the U.S. Supreme Court declared in Brown v. Board of Education (1955) that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, the desegregation of schools began. While some speedily abided by the Court order, other schools were slow in implementing change. For example, as the following photographs show, Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas resisted by closing the school. This collection of photos documents the implementation of school desegregation around the United States.
