Sojourner Truth was famous for her dedication to the abolition movement. Having been born into slavery in New York around 1797, Truth knew the brutality of slavery. In 1826, she escaped and became an outspoken opponent of slavery. She is most noted for her famous address entitled "Ain't I a Woman?" After the Civil War, Truth was active in helping newly freed slaves settle. She was also a proponent of women's rights.
