My Review
I have too many favorite African-American history books to pick just one, but the one that I am re-reading is American History in Black and White by David Barton, which gives the history of the Republican and Democratic parties, the Reconstruction era, many Black "firsts" in politics and so much more information about how people of color have been affected throughout US history.
I still don't know why African-American history is not American history. There is no separate history. It all occurs in the United States; it occurs in every state, every city and community. Haven't all Americans benefitted from George Washington Carver, Jazz, blood plasma, the real McCoy, and so many others? The ironing board, the elevator, the fountain pen, fiber optics--why is there still a need to segregate history?
